DIY - DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CHERRY PIT PILLOW

In the spirit of Halloween I made this little 'Dia de los Muertos' - themed cherry pit pillow out of fabric scraps left over from
one of my sisters projects. We kept the cherry pits after making cherry jam this past summer.

IS IT HALLOWEEN YET?

This is one of my first post in a while, we used the summer months to visit Russells parents in California, travel, and plan our wedding. Now that we are back in Germany I want to share my latest project: A Halloween Wreath.
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and I love to get an early start... This year I made a wreath out of straw, fabric scraps from past projects, and a bat out of jeans cut offs.

DIY - HEARTS OF FABRIC SCRAPS

Don't you have a bunch of fabric scraps from other projects just sitting around? I do and I decided to give them a new purpose today: Little Hearts.
I just grabbed two somewhat matching fabrics, leftover christmas ribbon, my scissors, tracing paper, a pencil, yarn, filling, and my sewing machine and I got to work.
I traced two hearts and added a .5 inch seam allowance. Then I cut out a total of 12 hearts, 6 of each fabric, 3 of each size, sewed them together, right sides together, added the ribbon, turned them around, filled them and closed the turning hole. And taaada: 6 beautiful hearts.

SEWING A BATHROBE

I am currently starting a gift pile for our nephew. He is just too cute to not spoil with huge amounts of gifts ;)
Since I love sewing and I refashion I decided to sew this Bathrobe out of this months Burda magazine. Here is their version of it:

You can find the pattern here.

Mine is going to be made out of this old towel:

And this cute whale fabric:

It is still in progress. I still have to sew on the pockets and finish all the seams... But here is what i have so far:

And off to this weeks Creadienstag :)

LIFE LATELY 10

This week was filled with trips. First I went on an excursion with my job to the 'Zeche Zollverein' an old coal mine and UNESCO world heritage today.

I'll share more about this trip soon.

The second trip Russ and I took to Paris. It was wonderful and I'll also blog a little bit more on it next week.

Here are some of my favorite reads this week:

First there are '38 Yahoo Questions That Will Destroy Your Faith in Humanity'. Some of them cracked me up and others just kind of scared me. Well you should definitely check them out.

As a language major I love checking out other languages so these illustrations of words that cannot be translated into English. Found some German ones, check them out.

And of course so DIY's that I want to try soon:
* I love this Epoxy Resin Coffee Table and Happy Hour Marquee on A Beautiful Mess. The table looks like SO much fun to make and the Marquee just looks so cool.
* I wanna sew a bunch of these square shirts. They look easy enough to make...
* This little floor pillow looks so nice and you can download a free pattern.

MAKE-UP BAGS

So after sewing a bunch of Make-Up Bags already, I decided to make some more in different shapes. The one on the far right is the one that I have made before, it is perfect for Make-Up, but can be used for all kinds of things, my mum used the one I gave her for her knitting supplies... The other two are slightly changed versions, the middle one is a little smaller and made up of two fabrics, the left one is only half of the original. The smalls one on the very left is ging to be my new pencil case, I think it is fun and a nice pop of color! What do you think?

Ab zu RUMS damit :)
Und auch zum Creadienstag nächstes Mal.

LIFE LATELY 05

This past week was so much fun, I can't wait to share all the details with you!

There was an Easter package in the Mail for us, containig our favorite Easter candy (Bordeaux' from See's - YUM), cute place mats and a bunny cookie plate. So I invited my mum and sister over for breakfast and made french toast bake.

Also the monthly Antique market is back! The pause over the winter so last Sunday was the first one in a while and I found some gens.

Did you read my post on the Monster Plush? I made another one! His name is Skully.

I've started looking at Easter stuff on Pinterest...I love these strawberry carrots and bunny clay bowls.
Another thing I've been looking at are hats. I am still searching for the perfect hat. I got some inspiration from Amanda. I think I need to order from Forever21 online, I just love their hats. I never thought I'd miss them when we moved to Germany, but the do have some fun things.

Hope you have a good start into the new week!

DIY - MONSTER PLUSH

So I have seen these cute little Monsters around the Internet for quiet some time. Yesterday I went into my favorite bookstore and they had one sitting on a shelf, so I thought to myself why not get it. It is just so cute. 29.99€ - not gonna happen. So I went home and thought about how to make them myself. I had some jeans fabric left over from when I cut off a pair of jeans to make shorts, so all I needed was a cute back fabric. I decided on these cute hearts. I stenciled a pattern onto the jeans fabric, free handed. and started sewing. It is harder than it looks online. To get the eyes perfectly round and have everything stick out where it is supposed to... Well this was my first try and I'm sure I'll make some more because they are SO darling.

If you are looking for more inspiration check here...

I DID IT!

I finally went out, bought some fabric and made use of the sewing machine my mum gave to me. It took me longer than I thought it would, but I never gave up on the thought of starting sewing back up once I moved back to Germany. So when I found a cute pattern and amazing fabrics I finally sat down and did it. And I'm pleased with the outcome.

Hope on over to creadienstag for more creativity!

Re-fashion: Inspiration for this weekend

What a crazy busy week. It has all been leading up to the big event, Russell's birthday tomorrow. So I haven't gotten around to my refashion yet. But I will definetely do something this weekend. My fingers are itching and there are so many cute refashion projects out there.

I wanted to share some of my inspiration for my next projects with you guys. I usually hang out on  pinterest and two of my favorite refashion blogs Merricks Art and Cotton & Curls to find inspiration for my next project. These two projects are currently on my to-do list:

Making a plain white t-shirt into a cute polka dot shirt.

Or making a man's polo shirt into a sailor striped shirt.

For more inspiration check out my DIY pinterest board, it has a bunch of re-fashion, easy sewing, and other DIY's.

Happy Friday!

Re-Fashion: Starting Easy

When sorting through my closet I had some items that I was not ready to get rid of but I also couldn't wear anymore, so they went on the re-fashion pile. One of those items was my favorite sweater, that unfortunately landed in the dryer, so it went from huge, cozy, and soft to tiny, hard, and un-comfy. I can't throw it away yet, so I decided to take off its arms and make gloves out of them.
The tiny sweater...

Take off the arms...

Measure the size

Sew it right sides together
turnaround...taaadaaaa.

No More Shopping - A Wardrobe Makeover and Refashion

They day has come, I have more clothes than I actually need, and I am actually admitting it.
I am spending money that I could spend on traveling, tattoos, and books. So I promised myself (and Russell), that I will not buy any new clothes, shoes, and accessories for at least one month. Starting today. In order not to feel the withdrawal and to use my time in a creative way, I will re-fashion at least one piece a week for the next 4 weeks. Watch out for my first post on Friday!

The goal is to get my closet ready to move to Germany with me. Right now I would need 10 suitcases, and that's more than I could carry. So here we go, the shrinking begins. A while ago, I found Geneva's blog a pair & a spare. One post that immediately caught my attention was the Wardrobe Rehab. So I decided to try and follow her system to give my wardrobe a long-needed make over. Step 1 in her series is called: Culling. What this basically means is, to shrink down your wardrobe. That is the goal. In order to reach that goal, I pulled everything out of my closet, dresser, and shoes and made piles of what to

1. Keep
2. Alter
3. Refashion
4. Sell
5.Donate

Some simple questions to ask yourself and help decide if you want to keep an item or not are:

- When was the last time I wore this?
The general rule is: If you can't remember the last time you wore it, don't keep it! Exceptions are special items (cocktail dresses, gowns, and other clothes you wear to special occasions) and a small number of sentimental pieces.

- Does this make me feel attractive?
Each and every item in your closet should make you feel comfortable and attractive. So if you don't feel good in it, there is no reason to keep it.

- Does it fit properly or does it need altering?
I love to use the excuse 'I'll fit into these pants one day' - Honestly, I probably won't. So all minor alterations and size adjustments can go on the alteration pile, everything else: donate!

After doing this with EVERYTHING in your closet, including shoes, coats, underwear, and accessories, you should be left with one pile with clothes that look good, fit well, and make you feel beautiful.

What to do with the rest?
Sell: All items that are in good condition and of good quality can be brought to a second hand or consignment store. That way you will get a little money for all the pain of culling your wardrobe has caused you. Be aware that there are different kind of consignment stores, some will only take brand names, others will take anything that is in good condition. You can also sell items on ebay, facebook, shop-my-closet, etc.
Donate: All the items that are still in good condition but cannot be sold, can be dropped off at the closest GoodWill or Salvation Army. This will make you feel good and help somebody else to find their perfect wardrobe.
Alter: Figure out what exactly needs to be altered and if you can do it or if you need it done. If you can do it yourself put it on your schedule. Give yourself a month. If you haven't done it by then it goes over to the sell or donate pile.
Refashion: This is the pile I am currently most excited about because I will get "new" clothes without spending much money. I already have two projects in mind for my Refashion pile:

1. Re-use my favorite sweater. It shrunk because my lovely boyfriend put it in the dryer - I don't blame him, but I also don't want to throw it away. So I am thinking of making gloves out of it. I have seen tutorials on Pinterest, so I'll give it a shot.

2. Fix up a dress. My sister gave me a really pretty blouse dress. Unfortunately it is too short, so I am looking to make it longer...

Keep your fingers crossed for me and my pledge. If you have recently sorted through your wardrobe, love to refashion, or have any tips leave me a comment!

25 Things To Do Before I Turn 25.

I just realized that I am going to 25 in just a few months. A quarter century. It all started with my mama asking me if we should do something for our birthdays. I say birthdays because this year is a big one for the family. I will be 25, my mama 50, and my grandma 75. FUN! (and scary at the same time). Anyways, I have been keeping a list of what I really want to do for years. Some of the goals I have accomplished, others are still waiting. And what would be a better time to work off this list?

01. Plan my future.
I completed my Bachelor's Degree in 2011. I have been working, traveling, and interning ever since then. Even though it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot it is time to continue my education. So I need to find a Master's Program in Germany. This is the Top 1 goal before I turn 25.

02. Let go of clothes that I do not wear (anymore).
I am a hoarder, when it comes to clothes. "I will wear this again", "I might make something out of this", "I wore this on my first date". I am good at making up excused to keep clothes. So one of my big goals is it to sort through my closets, and let go of stuff. I started this process, and it was easier than I thought. Now I need to stick with it and do it on a regular basis.

03. Move into my first own apartment.
Over the years I have lived in a bunch of different places. But I have always lived with roommates. Now that Russell and I have been dating for over a year it is time to make a place our own and I am really excited.

04. Try new workouts and stick with at least one of them.
I am very, very difficult with workouts, because I get bored really fast. But I actually found a workout that I love. It is called Cardio Barre, and  it is the perfect mix of everything. Check it out here.

05. See a musical on Broadway.
I did this with my sister last year, during our travels. We spent quiet some time in New York, and one night we went and saw "The Phantom of the Opera". Unforgettable.

06. Make something every week.
I have made so many awesome things in the past and I can't wait to make more, especially for my apartment. I have come to love DIY's because they individualize everything and make it mine.

07. See the Grand Canyon.
I have been wanting to go forever. I am so close, but haven't been. Before I return to Germany for good, I would really love to take a trip to the Grand Canyon.

08. Cook more.
I like to cook, but it has to be easy. Therefore, I am always on the lookout for easy, quick, and delicious recipes, like this, or this.

09. Watch more movies.
I love movies (who doesn't?) and I really feel like I haven't seen enough. Especially "classics". So I need to do that. On my list: All Star Wars movies, The Godfather, Slumdog Millionaire, The Shawshank Redemption, All about my mother, and La Haine.

10. Get my first tattoo.
After years and years of dreaming about my first tattoo, it actually came as more of a surprise. It turned out beautiful and I love it.

11. Quit biting my fingers.
Odd enough I do not bite my fingernails, but my skin next to it. It just doesn't look pretty. So it is time to stop!

12. Learn: How to style my hair.
I have pretty much one hairstyle: The Bun. It's easy, comfortable, and fast. But I really want to learn some nice braids, easy up-do's, and how to make waves.

13. Plan Dates.
There is so much to do and still, our dates are usually 'dinner & a movie' dates. To make them a little more adventurous I started planning fun dates. On my list are museums, new restaurants, galleries, 'sight-seeing', adventures, and spa's. Please share your ideas.

14. Take more time to read and finish reading a book before starting a new one.
Right now I have 3 books on my nightstand, that I started but never finished. I am a fast reader, but I need to take the time to read and then finish one book at a time.

15. Buy the perfect LBD.
I have to admit, I had the perfect Little Black Dress, but that was 25 pounds ago. So now, I need to find a new one, until I fit back into the old one, ultimately a result of following #04.

16. Travel.
I have traveled quiet a bit in my 25 years on this planet. But I really want to go to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Bora Bora, South Africa and sooo many other places... So traveling is basically always on my list.

17. Make another Scrapbook.
I did it. I made one, and it was fun. I haven't made a scrapbook in a really long time, so it took me a little to get back into it. It turned out beautiful and fun. My next goal now is to

18. Start Smashbooking.
All those mini vacations and daily pleasures of life, that I don't want to forget need to go in a book. Since scrapbooking my daily life would be way to much work, I want to start filling Smashbooks... I will keep you posted on how that is going.

19. Keep my space organized.
No matter if it is a room, an apartment, loft, or house. I am a messy person. I have clothes flying around and books and papers everywhere. So I want to try to be more organized, especially once I move into my own apartment. I would love for it to be organized!

20. Learn: How to sew with a sewing machine.
I used to sew when I was younger, but back then all I did was hand sew. Since that doesn't really get you anywhere, at least not fast, I decided that I need to learn how to use a sewing machine. Last December I signed up for a sewing class at Joann's and I have completed a lot of fun projects so far. This is definitely a hobby I want to keep up!

21. Drink Water.
I love Ice Tea, Lemonade, Juices, and Smoothies. But I still need to drink more water. My skin is super dry if I don't drink enough, so I need to keep reminding myself to drink enough.

22. Learn: How to give myself a mani and pedi.
A nice mani/pedi. One that I can actually wear out. So if you have any tips on that, it would be greatly appreciated.

23. Improve my handwriting / calligraphy skills.
I see all these beautifully addressed letters, awesome chalkboards, and fun motivational posters, and having a decent handwriting or a personal "pretty" style would help making those things.

24. Write more letters and cards.
After #23 I want t write Birthday Cards and letters to the people I love. There is nothing more exciting than getting mail, so I want to give that feeling to my friends and family.

25. Wear more heels.
I love heels, they are pretty and make me feel beautiful. However I am a flipflop/minnetonka kinda girl. But I really want to start wearing more heels. Especially for events, birthdays, and special occasions.

What are your goals?

DIY - Sewing Preparation for a 70's Babydoll

I haven't done DIY instructions on my blog in a long time. Mainly because my projects right now are all sewing projects. I am not ready to write instructions for a whole sewing project yet. But I have to start somewhere. So I will give you a tutorial on the prep work for my next sewing project, which is a Vintage Babydoll.

I found the pattern at the Topanga Vintage Market. If you buy Vintage Patterns make sure that all the pieces are there and that they are in good condition. My pattern was untouched and sealed. I took my measurements and compared the to the pattern to make sure that it would fit. Be aware that most vintage patterns are 'one size' only, where as newer patters normally contain multiple sizes.

After choosing your pattern you need to choose a fabric. I went for a light seersucker fabric for the skirt and the sleeves and a cute white summer fabric for the top part.

With the seersucker fabric being on sale and my 50% off coupon from Joann's I paid about $15 for my material. Remember to buy matching thread and additional material noted on the pattern, such as lining, interfacing, etc. I am using white thread, which I still have from another project and I did not need any additional material.

Before you cut out your pattern you should wash, dry, and iron your fabric to avoid shrinkage after sewing all the pieces together.

The next thing is cutting out the pattern and pressing it. After that pin it to your fabric. Make sure you are aligning everything right. I chose a fabric with a one way design so I had to ensure that all pieces were laid out the same way so that I get a nice result when piecing the parts together.

After that you can start cutting your pieces. Once you are done cutting all your prep work is done and you can start the sewing.

I hope this was a help for all beginners like me. I will try and do more sewing tutorials to show my progress with sewing and my projects.
