Today, I am sharing (once again) my passion for everything vintage. I have been walking the antique-, flea-, and vintage markets of Southern California, looking for good finds and unique outfits. Last weekend Russell and I went to the Topanga Vintage Market. It was our first time together (and Russell's first time at a market like that ever), and we enjoyed ourselves very much.
It is right by the Westfield Promenade, every 4th Sunday of the month. It is $2 to get in and you will receive an awesome sticker at the entrance. There are rows and rows filled with wonderful vintage goodies. When we went we bought girls scout cookies and a local school was offering salads and drinks, which I just thought was wonderful.
I have been on a mission to find a vintage suitcase to display my scarfs, hats and jewelry. So this was my main focal point this time. I try and set myself some limits before I go shopping. Here is my Top 4:
1. Make a list of items that you really need.
Write down things that you want, need or have been looking for for a long time. Take the list and look at it before or while shopping. I tend to actually write on paper and hold the paper in my hand, but of course you can also put everything on your phone. I have an all-time list that includes Old Tins and until Sunday it included the Vintage suitcase...
2. Set yourself a budget.
My usual budget is $50. I always have a little extra cash, in case I find something super special, but I don't really go over my spending limit. (I'm sure I'll have o adapt that limit once I start looking for furniture...)
3. Don’t buy anything just because it is a bargain.
There are always a lot of really cute things. But try to avoid buying stuff, just because it is cheap. A good way to do that is to:
4. Think about how you would use every item before you make a purchase.
With every item that I am about buy, I think about how I can include it into my life. How would I wear it, pair it or display it? Does it need fixing? Is it worth putting on the DIY pile or does it need too much 'help'? Once your figured these things out, it becomes easier to determine what to buy.
I hope you like those tips. Let me know if you have any other guideline, tips or tick you have for vintage shopping.
